Funerals and Prices

Our Jehovah’s Witness funerals are specifically designed to accommodate your needs and beliefs fully in a way that only a dedicated specialist funeral director can.

Our uniquely tailored funeral options are offered in simple all-inclusive packages with straightforward transparent pricing.

Often the pricing of funeral services can be confusing due to numerous separate fees and elements which can make it difficult to quickly establish the total cost. At JW Funerals we have avoided such complications with our simple fixed price all inclusive packages which include all third party fees as well as our own. In each case, these funeral packages include everything that is necessary, but we are also sufficiently flexible that specific individual requirements can be accommodated at a modest additional cost if you wish.

Once chosen, we will always confirm to you in writing the total amount along with a summary of the service being provided for your records.

The Simple Cremation Package and our class leading Prepaid Plan

We  offer a generic simple cremation package which includes all of our fees as well as the necessary third party fees too and costs just £1,175 or £1,475. The price depends on the location where the person passes away which sometimes requires an emergency response. There is also the option to choose this for oneself and to organise and pay for the package at today’s prices which also removes a little of the burden from the shoulders of the loved ones left behind. The cost for the simple cremation as a prepaid funeral plan is also £1,475 because none of us know where we might be when the time comes.

It is well suited to Jehovah’s Witnesses because it includes everything required for a cremation, which is generally regarded as requiring the specific skills of a funeral director without any provision for the funeral service itself which can be organised by an elder or family member.

Many Jehovah’s Witnesses prefer the funeral service to take place in the Kingdom Hall meaning that the funeral directors input, organisation or attendance are unnecessary if it is not deemed essential for the coffin to be present for the service. If the funeral is taking place away from the crematorium in the comforting surroundings of the Hall without the coffin it can be far less distressing for the family and may be a supportive or even uplifting experience.

This is a basic package which is also often called direct cremation, based on a postal service and therefore involving no face to face contact with the funeral director before the cremation takes place. The cremation takes place privately with only the crematorium and our own staff present because the funeral itself takes place elsewhere. Our standard service also includes the personal return of ashes if required by prior appointment at no additional cost.

As a funeral plan our package is particularly comprehensive and because of this fact it is offered as a fully guaranteed plan thereby ensuring that no matter how far in the future the plan holder may pass away there will never be any extra to be paid. There are very few prepaid funeral plans which are truly fully guaranteed.  Most of them either exclude some essential features or fail to completely guarantee that increases in third-party costs will always be covered.

In this package the Memorial Service takes place entirely at the Kingdom Hall as is the case with our Funeral Service package. The key difference with this package is that we arrange for the private cremation to take place very quickly as a priority. We then ensure that the ashes are personally hand delivered back to the family or to the Kingdom Hall in a solid oak casket with an engraved plate attached prior to the Memorial Service taking place.

With this choice of service our staff to be in attendance for the Memorial Service is not necessary and therefore it is not included in our package.

The Kingdom Hall Funeral Service Package

In this package the funeral service takes place entirely at the Kingdom Hall with the cremation taking place privately very soon afterwards. In keeping with the need for the funeral to be simple and modest in style we avoid using a hearse (more details on our dedicated funeral vehicle can be found below). When we arrive with the coffin our staff unless requested otherwise would be dressed discreetly in standard contemporary blue suits rather than the traditional and very conspicuous Victorian style funeral director attire.

After the funeral ceremony the coffin is placed back in our funeral vehicle to be taken for an unattended cremation at the crematorium as soon as possible after the service.

Our Funeral Vehicle

Funeral Vehicle

As funeral directors specialising in funeral services specifically for Jehovah’s Witnesses we knew that most families would prefer that the funeral didn’t begin with the inappropriately ‘showy’ and conspicuous arrival of a traditional big black hearse. Many people find just the sight of a hearse distressing in itself and the vehicle has become symbolic of death, mourning loss and sadness.

We quite quickly settled on silver as the right colour for our funeral vehicle but deciding on the right vehicle itself was much harder. It couldn’t be an ordinary vehicle like you see on the road every day; of course, it had to be suitable for the intended purpose but just as importantly it had to be more understated and discreet.

Most hearses are adapted from Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XJ or Volvo estate cars and we agreed that it was appropriate to pick a prestigious brand for that important final journey. We picked the Mercedes-Benz E-Class partly because it is the largest premium estate car available but also because they make to order a rare partially hand built version which is the top of their range model.

Many people assume that these standard cars are lengthened and converted so that they are long enough and tall enough to accommodate coffins with floral tributes on top but in fact, this is not the case. The largest of estate cars currently available are already sufficiently large for the purpose of becoming a funeral vehicle and therefore the process of transformation into a hearse is not actually necessary. Funeral directors prefer to use a hearse as it is in keeping with their taste for flamboyance and being the centre of attention.

Usually, a hearse is constructed from the most basic specification model available due to the high cost of conversion, unlike our car which has almost every conceivable optional extra available. Even the petrol engine in the car was hand built by one man and proudly bears a plaque on the top with his name and signature. As a funeral car it is very subtle and effortlessly conveys the vehicle to the crematorium at barely above tickover whilst the air suspension ensures the smoothest of journeys. No one is likely to notice the vehicle on its journey or realise it’s true role as it blends so inconspicuously with the other traffic on the road.
